Panjim Coastal Security Police have arrested Gagan Deep N, a 32-year-old fraudster from Karnataka, days after he escaped custody at a Panaji casino. The Bengaluru native had duped a charitable trust of ₹6.30 crore by posing as an official from a multinational company. This rapid recapture highlights the challenges of securing suspects during evidence recovery in crowded public spaces.
Fraud Scheme and Initial Capture
Gagan Deep N drew attention when Bengaluru City Police arrested him on March 31 for impersonating a corporate executive to swindle the trust. Officers transported him to Goa on April 3 to trace funds he allegedly squandered at a Panaji casino. Such scams exploit trust in established brands, a tactic authorities encounter frequently in financial crimes across India.
Escape Amid Casino Chaos
On the night of April 4, the accused slipped away inside the crowded casino, shoving past personnel to vanish. This breach prompted Devanahalli Police to file a complaint, leading Panaji Coastal Security Police to register an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provisions. Escapes like this expose vulnerabilities in temporary custody arrangements, especially in high-traffic venues where oversight strains under crowds.
Manhunt and Swift Detention
Police combined human intelligence with technical surveillance to track him to Dodamarg, detaining him at an eco-farm before returning him to Goa. Police Inspector Sajith Pillai led the team, supervised by SP Roy Pereira and Coastal Security SP Rajesh Kumar. Bengaluru City Police now seek custody for deeper probes, underscoring the need for seamless inter-state coordination in fugitive pursuits.
Implications for Custody Protocols
The incident reveals gaps in real-time monitoring during off-site investigations, prompting reviews of protocols for high-value suspects. Recovering defrauded assets remains central, as casinos often serve as endpoints for ill-gotten gains. Ongoing inquiries will clarify the full extent of the deception and bolster measures against similar breaches.
